Judge not, and ye shall not be judged: condemn not, and ye shall not be condemned: forgive, and ye shall be forgiven:
This verse contains three commands – the third is “forgive”. We are to have the attitude of forgiveness established in our heart before an offense is even committed. We are to remember that our forgiveness is dependent on our willingness to forgive. Notice the two concepts of forgiveness – 1) judicial forgiveness – this is what takes place the moment of salvation, as we are released from the penalty of sin, 2) parental forgiveness – this is what is granted to us when we confess and forsake our sin, as it results in restoration of fellowship in the family of God. It is parental forgiveness that Jesus referred to here.
