But now we are delivered from the law, that being dead wherein we were held; that we should serve in newness of spirit, and not in the oldness of the letter.
When we were converted we are delivered from the Law. This is a result of our having died with Christ. Since He died as our Representative, we died with Him. In His death, Christ fulfilled all the claims of the Law by paying its awful penalty. We are now set free to serve in the newness of the Spirit and not in the oldness of the letter. It is no longer a question of slavishly adhering to minute details of forms and ceremonies but of the joyful outpouring of ourselves for the glory of God and the blessings of others.
