For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.
Isaiah revealed how the Messiah would come to the earth – as a child, born. The first clause speaks of His humanity, the second of His deity. The next part of the verse points forward to His Second Coming, when He will reign as King of kings and Lord of lords. The rest of the verse describes His personal qualities, as His name will be called 1) Wonderful, this name is a noun, which speaks of His Person and work, 2) Counsellor, He will have wisdom in government, 3) The mighty God, the omnipotent, supreme Ruler, 4) The everlasting Father, the source of eternity, 5) The Prince of Peace, the One who will at last bring peace to this troubled world.
