The burden of Dumah. He calleth to me out of Seir, Watchman, what of the night? Watchman, what of the night? The watchman said, The morning cometh, and also the night: if ye will enquire, enquire ye: return, come.
Dumah is Edom. An anxious Edomite asked the watchman how late it was, this was asking if the Assyrian menace was almost over. The answer the watchman gave was “the night of your present turmoil will end, and a new day will follow, but soon another night will come”. If they sought a comforting answer to their inquiries, they first had to repent and only then would the answer be such as they hoped for; the night of their suffering would end, and a new bright morning of deliverance will dawn upon them.
