Hear ye this, O house of Jacob, which are called by the name of Israel, and are come forth out of the waters of Judah, which swear by the name of the LORD, and make mention of the God of Israel, but not in truth, nor in righteousness. For they call themselves of the holy city, and stay themselves upon the God of Israel; The LORD of hosts is his name.
God addressed the captives of Judah in Babylon. Most of them were apostate; only a few were faithful to Jehovah. He told them that they called themselves by the name of Israel, which means the prince of God, but they are not princes. They were descended from Judah, which means praise, but they do not praise Him. They confessed the God of Israel but they did not confess their sins. They called themselves after the holy city but they were not holy. They leaned on the God of Israel but they were not godly.
