But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away. And there is none that calleth upon thy name, that stirreth up himself to take hold of thee: for thou hast hid thy face from us, and hast consumed us, because of our iniquities.
The Israelites confessed to personal uncleanness, and admitted that their best deeds, referred to as righteousnesses, are like filthy rags. No wonder that they were like fading leaves, driven away by the wind of their own iniquities. There was spiritual deadness in Israel. Those who would intercede for them are nowhere to be found, because Jehovah had abandoned them to the consequences of their sins.
