Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.
Jesus began the verse with the words, “verily, verily”, which draws attention to the importance of what He was about to say. Then He added the very personal announcement, “I say unto you”. Jesus is speaking to us in a very personal and intimate way. He stated five things – 1.) “he that heareth My word”, to hear the word of Jesus means not only to listen to it, but also to receive it, to believe it, to obey it, 2.) “and believeth on Him that sent Me”, it is a matter of believing that God sent Christ into the world, 3.) “hath everlasting life”, it does not say that we will have eternal life but that we possess eternal life currently, 4.) “and shall not come into condemnation”, the one who possesses eternal life is not condemned now and never will be condemned in the future, 5.) “but is passed from death unto life”, the one who has trusted Christ has passed out of a state of spiritual death into one of spiritual life.
