2 Corinthians 4:7
But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us.
The apostle Paul wrote of the human instrument to which the gospel treasure had been committed. The treasure is the message of the gospel, while the earthen vessel is the frail human body. The contrast between the two is tremendous – the gospel, which comes from God and is eternal, has been entrusted to a frail, fragile earthen vessel, our body. The reason why a vessel of earth has been entrusted with something of such value – so that the excellency of power may be of God and not of us.
