We can please God, if we believe in Him  -  Hebrews 11:6

But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.

No amount of good work can compensate for lack of faith. Faith is the only thing that gives God His proper place. Faith not only believes that God exists, but it also trusts Him to reward those who diligently seek Him.
