They that are merciful will receive mercy  -  Matthew 5:7

Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.

In God’s kingdom, those who are merciful to others, will experience mercy in return. To be merciful means to be actively compassionate. This can be understood in two aspects – 1) to withhold punishment from offenders who deserve it, 2) to help others in need who cannot help themselves. We are to remember that God showed mercy by sparing us from the judgment which our sins deserved and in demonstrating kindness to us through the saving work of Christ.
