To depart from evil, we are to fear God - Proverbs 16:6
By mercy and truth iniquity is purged: and by the fear of the LORD men depart from evil.
The first part of this proverb needs to be looked at in the light of all other Scriptures on the subject, as it cannot mean that we are saved by being merciful and truthful, because salvation is always by grace, through faith in Christ. Only to the extent that mercy and truth are the signs of saving faith can they be said to purge iniquity. The second part of this proverb is plain – by trusting God, we can escape misfortune and calamity.
